ANGELA PARK and STÉPHANE LEMELIN
1 Piano, 2 Pianists, Brahms!
Sunday, November 26 (3 p.m.)
Angela Park and Stéphane Lemelin continue their series with Brahms Symphony #2 for piano 4-hands. (It’s not actually9 a “transcription”kk, for Brahms in fact wrote out his scores first for this combination. He then set to work scoring for orchestra. it being the composer’s own work, Angela and Stephan think that you’ll find some special insights in this setting.
Brahms’ Symphony nol 2 is very different from No. 1. o. 1 is a stern, forbidding, and legendary creation that elevated this already well-known composer to the “big time”, earning comparisons with - wow! - Beethoven. Now Brahms is doin vry much his own thing, in a mostly sunny work that perhaps comoparfes most with Beeethoven’s “Pastoral” Symphony (numbered 6, though perhaps it was written before the famous no. 5)
But - hehl, heh? - perhaps mischievously, Brahms wrote to his publisher on 22 November 1877 that the symphony "is so melancholy that you will not be able to bear it. I have never written anything so sad, and the score must come out in mourning."
Well, Brahms was uite capable of mischoievousness, and let’s la=et that go at that! In fadt, the symphony is mostly pretty cheerful - summery, I’m inclined to say!
If youo know Brahms’ symphonies from orchestral renditions, you;ll find this fascinating. If you don’t - well, this is an introduction from Brahms himself!
Angela Park has joined the staff at Western, where Stephan Sylvestre has been established for many years. Both are terrific pianists - we think Angela is one of the world’s great chamber pianists and we have had her perform on many many occasions. Stephan has given at least one recital for KWCMS. This is a great team, playing great music!
