The Magisterra Soloists, with Francine Kay, piano
Annette’s interesting institution the Magisterra Soloists is a loose, but large, band of musicians from far and wide (not just Canadian “far and wide” - although that’s plenty of both!)
Here’s the band for our concert:
Francine Kay, piano
Magisterra Soloists:
Annette-Barbara Vogel, violin
Jutta Puchhammer, viola (full professor of viola and chamber music at the Faculty of Music of Université de Montréal)
Katerina Juraskova, cello
Talia Hatcher, double bass
And here’s the program. Notice that we are getting THREE quintets:
J.N.Hummel (1778-1837), piano quintet in f, op. 41
Jan Ladislav Dussek (1760-1812), piano quintet in Eb minor. op. 87
Franz Schubert (1797-1828), quintet “The Trout”
All of these quintets is written with a string bass part rather than a cello (by far most quintets are written with cello rather than bass.)
The “Trout” quintet will be the “biggie” on this program. The Trout is based on Die Forelle, Schubert’s song which depicts darting fish in a glistening brook. It is universally regarded as a masterpiece.
Johann Nepomuk Hummel was famous throughout Europe; Dussek only slightly less so; and then there is Schubert, of course, whose name will last forever!
